I would like to welcome you to the Helena Police Department website. The Helena Police Department is a full service, professional police department serving a vibrant city with a population of over 17,000 citizens. The department is made up of dedicated officers and dispatchers who work hard every day to keep Helena one of the safest cities of any size in the State of Alabama.

The Helena Police Department is committed to serving the citizens of Helena through providing community oriented and problem solving based police services designed for our community.

The Helena Police Department delivers these services primarily through the Communications Division and the Patrol Division. The Communications Division is the first point of contact for people in need of police services. It is a difficult and sometimes thankless job and the men and women who provide these services for the Helena Police Department are some of the best anywhere. The Patrol Division is made up of uniformed officers engaged in answering calls for service and conducting proactive patrols of our community twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. Serious offenses are investigated more fully by the Investigations Division in cooperation with the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office and other local and state law enforcement agencies.

The Helena Police Department provides more specialized police services through the use of specialty units such as the Emergency Response (SWAT) Unit, Traffic Investigation Unit, Crime Scene Investigation Unit and the School Resource Officers. These units are made up of dedicated officers who volunteer for the extra training that these ancillary duties require.

All Helena Police Officers are required by both state law and department policy to attend advanced training in their respective specialty fields each year. The department enjoys having officers cross trained in numerous disciplines such as Hazardous Materials Response, Crisis Negotiations and Emergency Medical Services.

The Helena Police Department also is proud of the professional and academic accomplishments of Captain James Penhale and Lieutenant Brad Flynn, who are graduates of the distinguished the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia and Detective Sergeant Chris Rollan who has previously been awarded National Officer of the Year by the National Retail Association for his work solving numerous unsolved armed robbery cases in the Birmingham area.

The Police Department offers local young people the opportunity to join a nationally recognized and award winning Police Explorer Post. The post is open to young men and women ages 14-21 who are interested in a career in law enforcement. They volunteer their time for police style training, civic projects, and community service events and provide hundreds of hours of service to the city each year. Helena Police Explorers have competed in national and state law enforcement exploring competitions where they have been awarded numerous trophies and awards, and they are known and respected by law enforcement professionals throughout the country. The program is an excellent path to a career in law enforcement and we currently have eight former explorers who work in different capacities for the police department, including the Chief of Police.

We take great pride in our city and the level of service we are able to provide our residents with such a small staff. Through the efforts of the men and women of the Helena Police Department, the citizens of Helena can enjoy very low levels of crime and Helena is consistently recognized as one of the best places to live in the State of Alabama. We are proud to protect and serve the best community in our State. For questions or to call for police services please contact us at (205)663-6499.
