I would like to welcome you to the Helena Police Department website. With a rapidly growing population over 17,000, we have very highly trained police officers who have taken an oath to protect and serve our citizens and to continually make Helena one of the safest cities in which to live in the State of Alabama.
The Police Department is a multi faceted full service law enforcement agency and is composed of several divisions of police services. The department is comprised of:
Patrol Division, which is the most visible component of the department and comprises all officers who are responsible for patrol and primary response to calls for service.
Criminal Investigations Division which is responsible for the investigation of all felony and other warranted crimes. The Criminal Investigation Division is also responsible for the assignment of a Narcotics Detective to the Shelby Narcotics Task Force to attack the flow of narcotics on a county and regional level.
Crime Scene Investigators who are charged with the processing and documentation of all crime scenes and other scientific investigations.
K-9 unit which assists the patrol division with the services of a highly trained narcotics and patrol certified K-9 and patrol officer.
Traffic Operations Unit which is responsible for not only traffic safety and enforcement, but also Commercial Vehicle Enforcement.
Tactical Unit which is staffed by highly trained and equipped officers who stand ready to address any serious incidents that may occur within the city.
School Resource Officer Program, which insures the safety of our children by placing an officer in each of the schools within the city. These officers are also trained in advanced areas of school security and enjoy partnering with the teachers and school staff with the one goal of protecting our students and our schools.
All Helena Police Officers are required by both state law and department policy to attend advanced training in their respective specialty fields each year to remain proficient in their areas of service to the department. The department enjoys having officers cross trained in numerous disciplines such as Hazardous Materials Response, Crisis Negotiations, Emergency Medical Services as well as Community Policing and a Chaplain Program.
The Helena Police Department also is proud of the professional and academic accomplishments of several of its officers and how they serve the city. The department has 2 senior officers, Captain James Penhale and Lieutenant Brad Flynn, who are graduates of the distinguished the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Detective Sergeant Chris Rollan also was awarded National Officer of the Year by the National Retail Association for his work solving numerous unsolved armed robbery cases in the Birmingham area. We also have several officers who have been publicly recognized for their hard work in crime prevention and response, and in some cases, life saving skills. We are very proud to have these officers serve our community.
The Police Department is also very proud of our nationally recognized and award winning Police Explorer Post. The post recently celebrated their 16th year and consists of young men and women ages 14-21 who are interested in a career in law enforcement. They volunteer their time for police style training, civic projects, and community service events and provide hundreds of hours of service to the city each year. Helena’s Explorer Post have competed in national and state law enforcement exploring competitions where they have been awarded numerous trophies and awards, and they are known and respected by law enforcement professionals throughout the country. The program is an excellent path to a career in law enforcement and we currently have 11 former explorers who now work in different capacities for the police department.
We take great pride in our city and the level of service we provide our residents. Helena continuously enjoys record low levels of crime and is consistently recognized as one of the best places in which to live in the state of Alabama. We are proud to protect and serve the best community and people anywhere.
I hope you have found this site helpful and if I, or any member of the Helena Police Department can be of any service to you, please give us a call at 663-6499.
