Helena Market Days
September 4 Chef Demo
Prepare to be impressed when organic growers, Julie and Russell Morrow, of Doriette Farm in Moody man the grill for the 9:00 a.m. cooking demo. On the menu is made from scratch Whole Wheat Pitas topped with Roasted Red Bell Pepper and Garlic Hummus and Spicy Fried Green Tomatoes.
Julie will demonstrate how to grill the red peppers which will be used to flavor the hummus. Since she is the bread guru, she will also explain how easy it is to make pita and other flatbreads at home, both on an outdoor grill and in the kitchen. She says that once you have tasted homemade, you will not ever want to buy at the grocery again. Russell will give some pointers on prepping the tomatoes and will share the secrets of his hot sauce and sourdough batter for the fried green tomatoes……yum!
Doriette Farm is an 18 acre mixed use facility that offers equine boarding and riding trails, Tennessee meat goats, handmade soaps, and organically grown fruits and vegetables. The garden, which began several years ago as a few rows near the house, has grown each year with new crops being added each season. This spring a little used riding ring was transformed into a huge garden, making total garden space over an acre.
Plans for the fall garden include spinach, broccoli, various lettuces, and carrots. Next spring will bring another round of the cool season crops plus sugar snap peas, snow peas and strawberries. Typical summer crops are heirloom tomatoes, beans, corn, okra, watermelon, squash, cucumbers, blueberries, and cantaloupes.
